(This poem, inspired by my trip to Cebu about a year ago, reminds me of my childhood and of many things that the younger generation has missed. I dedicate this poem to my children.)
Wow, pagkatapos 25 ka tuig, nagsosyal ka na.
Katapusan ko nga kita kanimo sa uma.
Ay sus, ari ka man lang gali, sa Cebu Ayala—
Nagahining-hining, mabilog-bilog, mapula-pula,
Nagahigda sa malum-ok nga styro
Kag nagapamurongkot ka plastik nga see-through.
Sa sobra ko nga kahidlaw,
Ikaw ginpaputos kag gindala.
Sa balay, si subang naganyat,
Abi na ubas, naghakop kag nagtimo
Dayon singgit, "Ay maaplod!"
Ang ikaduha, natingala.
Nagpudyot it isa, nag-ingkit kag nagkuri-it,
Tapos puyag-it, "Maaslom!"
Ang ikatatlo, nagturok dulang.
Waay gid nagtandog.
Imbes nga mangakig, ako nalu-oy,
Nanghayhay kag naghambal,
"Ako sang edad ninyo,
Nagadurugo ya batiis kag buli ka saka
Kag nagapurula ya bibig ka usap,
Makakaon lang ka
SARALI."

On Sarali (Terminalia edulis BLANCO)
This fruit "comes from a large tree that group [sic] up to 75+ feet. The fruit when fully ripe turn [sic] a nice burgundy red. And besides being eaten raw, often with salt, they are used to flavor and age lambanog.... The fruit bruise [sic] incredibly easily and while very similar in many aspects to the “real” cherries I know, they are from different families of fruits."
